How to Recover Deleted Files in FreeBSD
Nothing is more frustrating than accidentally deleting critical business files or important personal files. Users of FreeBSD, thankfully, have an excellent and simple solution to recovering lost files: TestDisk. TestDisk is a powerful, and free, piece of software that can both undelete files, as well as restore or repair damage partitions and boot records. Check below for usage instructions:

Download the TestDisk source from the download link listed below and compile them for use in FreeBSD.

While logged in on the Root account in FreeBSD, run the TestDisk executable file.

From the TestDisk user interface, under the [Advanced] menu, select Filesystem Utils.

Select the partition the data was removed from, then select [Undelete].

Highlight the file you want restores and press "C" to begin the restoration process.

Select a destination to restore the file to from the directory tree.

Repeat this process if multiple files are to be restored, otherwise press "Q" to quit.

Tips & Warnings
When restoring your files, place them on a different partition or some removable media to prevent damaging other accidentally deleted files, as restoring a file to the partition it was deleted from could overwrite other deleted files.
Do not add or change ANY files on your hard drive. Deleted data remains on the hard drive or other media until the space has been overwritten. When downloading TestDisk, use another computer to protect your data, and run the software from a USB drive, CD-Rom, or other media.
