Although some model railroaders choose to purchase all of their items separately, it may be easier to simply buy a prepackaged, ready-to-run model railroad layout. Although this type of train set is often of lower quality than a collection of individual items, it is much faster and easier than building a layout from scratch. HO trains sets are sized larger for younger train enthusiasts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the box to your train set and take out each piece of the set to make sure that nothing is missing or broken. Check the wheels on all of the cars to make sure that there is no flash on the flanges that would interfere with their ability to roll.

  2. Step 2

Assemble the track by sliding each piece together so that the metal rail joiners slide onto each rail, cupping the bottom and side of each rail. Make sure that the joiners don't slide underneath it. Push each piece together securely so that the rail ends on each piece of track are flush. Secure the track to a sheet of plywood for greater stability.

  3. Step 3

Slide the bare ends of each wire into the spring clips attached to the terminal track, or else plug them into the terminal track, depending on the manufacturer. Attach the other ends to the power pack, screwing the bare ends into the "variable DC" terminals.

  4. Step 4

Test-run the locomotive to ensure that it is running correctly and then add the rest of the train cars, ending with the caboose or the locomotive. Open up the throttle and take your train to its destination. All aboard!
