How to Decorate Book Shelves

Bookshelves can provide lovely focal points in the room when decorated correctly. This is especially true when you think outside of the box and decorate them with items other than books. Create new purposes for your bookshelves instead of the sometimes boring "place for books only." Have a little fun and use your imagination when you decorate the bookshelves in your home.

1. Add flowers when decorating bookshelves. Try placing bouquets of dried flowers on the book shelves or perhaps a vase of fresh or imitation silk flowers. Baskets of flowers provide nice touches to the bookshelf, and a well-placed long-stem rose can add a sense of romance to your bookshelves.

2. Use bookshelves as decorative storage. Place decorative boxes or baskets on the shelf for mail, remote controls and other household items. Use these boxes as bookends. Make sure the boxes and baskets vary in size and shape to add visual interest to your bookshelves.

3. Display collections when decorating book shelves. Bookshelves are great places to showcase your different collections. Blown-glass figurines, porcelain knick knacks and the like will add depth and dimension to your bookshelves.

4. Display photos on your bookshelves. Similar pictures frames should be placed together, and several similarly themed photos (such as vacation photos) should be included in a group.
