How to Crochet a Sweater for an Adult

  1. Step 1
    Choose a color.

    Choose a color.

Choose the color of yarn for your sweater. Try this gauge--6.5 double crochets + 4 rows = 4 inches.
Start with the back of the sweater and chain 31. For the first row, double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook and each remaining chain. Chain 3 and turn.
For the second row, double crochet in each double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 for Row 3 through Row 5.

  2. Step 2

Shape the armholes by turning the back and slip stitching over the first 3 stitches. Double crochet in the next 25 stitches, leaving the last 3 stitches. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet together, then double crochet in the rest of the stitches to the last 2 double crochets and double crochet those together. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet in each stitch across. Repeat the last row 3 times. Fasten the yarn off.

  3. Step 3

Work on the left front of the sweater. Chain 11 and double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook and the remaining 9 chains across. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat this row until the left front is the same length as the back to the armhole.

  4. Step 4

Shape the armhole by turning the piece, slip stitching over the first 3 stitches and double crochet in each stitch until you come to the end. Chain 3 and turn, double crochet in each stitch to the last 2 stitches and double crochet 2 together over the last 2 stitches. Work evenly in double crochet until the front is the same length as the back. Fasten the yarn off.

  5. Step 5

Work the same on the right front as you did for the left front but reverse the shaping. The sleeves will be worked on next. Chain 23 and double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook and in each chain across. Chain 3 and turn, double crochet in each stitch across. Repeat the last row 9 times.

  6. Step 6

Shape the cap by slip stitching over the first 3 stitches and double crocheting in the next 15 stitches. Leave the remaining stitches. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet 2 together and double crochet in each stitch to the last 2 stitches, double crochet 2 together over the last 2 stitches. Fasten the yarn off.

  7. Step 7

Using a needle and yarn, sew the shoulder seams together and sew in the sleeves. Sew the side seams and the sleeve seams. For the edging, join the yarn and work single crochets all around the entire sweater edges. Work 3 single crochets at the corners and slip stitch to begin the single crochet. Chain 1 and single crochet in each single crochet around. Work 3 single crochets in each corner single crochet. Do this for the next 2 rows also and join with a slip stitch to the beginning single crochet. Fasten the yarn off. Repeat this edging around the lower edges of each sleeve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your gauge is correct.
  • When choosing a color for a project, make sure you purchase enough to finish the whole project. If it is an unusual color, your source may sell out. Often, even the same dye lots are a little different in color.
