How to Add a Roof to an Existing Deck

Adding a roof to your existing deck is a great way to add privacy and shelter to the area. This is especially important in regions that are very hot or get a lot of rain. You will be able to enjoy your deck year-round once it is covered by this simple wood and tin roof. The roof of the deck connects to the home to keep water from leaking through. Follow these steps to add a basic roof to an existing deck.

• Tape measure
• 2-inch x 4-inch boards
• Plywood
• Electric saw
• Metal corner brackets
• Wood screws
• Screwdriver
• 4-inch x 4-inch posts
• Lag bolts
• Wrench
• Roofing paper
• Roofer's nails
• Hammer
• Tin roofing
• Metal flashing

Instructions

1. Measure the dimensions of your existing deck. Cut two side pieces and two end pieces from 2-inch by 4-inch boards according to your measurements. The end pieces should be slightly shorter than the actual width of the deck because they will be attached to the inside edge of the side pieces. Cut enough plywood panels to cover the entire surface of the deck's roof.

2. Set the 2x4 pieces on the ground so that they form a box. Use metal brackets and wood screws to secure the corners.

3. Cut several pieces of 2x4 the same width as the end pieces. Use these as roof joists to brace the frame. One joist should be attached to the inside of the side pieces for every two feet of length.

4. Use 4x4 posts to extend the existing corner posts of the deck. The front posts should be the same height as your home's roof. Cut the rear posts six inches to a foot shorter than the front posts to give the roof a slight angle. This slope is important because it allows water to drain off of the roof. Attach the front posts to the side of your home with lag bolts.

5. Have a friend help you lift up the roof frame and set it onto the corner posts. Use lag bolts to attach the frame to each post. Use wood screws to attach plywood panels to the top of the roof frame.

6. Attach roofing paper to the plywood with roofer's nails. Nail down a layer of tin roofing and connect it to the home's roof with metal flashing.

• Check your local building codes before beginning construction. Some areas have certain specifications that must be followed when adding a roof to an existing deck. You may also have to pay for a building permit and have the roof inspected when it is completed. Always wear safety goggles and a dust mask when operating an electric saw.
