Asphalt rolled roofing can be applied to almost any roof and is used almost exactly like asphalt shingles. Asphalt roofing comes in 36-inch-wide rolls and in a variety of weights (thicknesses) and colors. Asphalt rolled roofing can be used as a primary roofing material or as an under layer for shingles or other roofing materials.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Asphalt rolled roofing
  • Asphalt plastic cement
  • Brush
  • Roofing nails
  • Hammer or nail gun
  1. Step 1

Sweep and clean the roof of all sharp objects. Pound down nails or any other sharp objects that could puncture or tear the rolled roofing material.

  2. Step 2

    Install any needed metal flashing.

  3. Step 3

Start at the lower edge (eave) of the roof. Snap a chalk line 34 inches from the edge of the roof. Roll roofing material out lengthwise along the edge of the roof with 2 inches of material overhanging the edge. The upper edge of the roofing material should line up perfectly with your chalk line.

  4. Step 4

Drive a roofing nail 2 inches from the top edge of the roll, spaced every 6 to 8 inches.

  5. Step 5

Lift the lower edge of roofing material and apply asphalt plastic cement with a brush all along the edge of the roof to hold down the lower edge of the roll of asphalt.

  6. Step 6

Snap a chalk line 4 inches down from the top edge of the asphalt you have just nailed down. Roll out a second layer of asphalt and line up its lower edge with your chalk line. This creates a 4-inch overlap of the two rolls of asphalt.

  7. Step 7

Nail the top edge of this second roll 2 inches from its top edge and then apply asphalt plastic cement along the lower edge, gluing the overlap down.

  8. Step 8

Continue up the slope of the roof until you reach the peak. Run a roll of asphalt along the peak of the roof with one half on one side of the peak and the other half on the other side. Use asphalt plastic cement to glue this cap-piece in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep rolls of asphalt roofing material warmed---above 45F. Keep rows level---measure frequently and use chalk lines as guides. Nail heads will be hidden under overlaps. Glue all overlaps down with asphalt plastic cement.
