Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trim from around the window from the inside as well as the outside. Place a pry bar on the edge of the trim and tap it with a hammer to force it under the piece of trim. Push down on the pry bar to pop out the mails that are holding the trim to the wall.

    • 2

Examine the window to see how the window frame is attached to the studs. Older brick homes may have nails or screws securing the window frame. These will need to be removed before the window frame can be taken out.

    • 3

Remove the nails or screws that were used to secure the frame to the studs. Use the pry bar to work the nails out of the wood and then extract them using a hammer. A drill or screwdriver can be used to take out the screws. Make sure to put the correct size attachment on the drill for the size of the screw.

Pull the window out of the wall. A window is usually removed by taking it out from the outside. Have one person on the inside of the house gently push on the window. Grab the window near the bottom, and then slide it out of the opening.

    • 5

Clean out the window opening to remove any debris. Use a scraping tool or putty knife to scrape off any old caulk. Remove any old nails that protrude from the woodwork, and then clear out any old insulation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Nails that are hard to come out can be cut using a Sawzall.

  • Prying out an old frame can cause wood to splinter. Older construction homes may have nails that were set in the mortar.
