How to Convert WMV Files to Quicktime
WMV stands for Windows Media Video and is Windows' main proprietary video format that works with the Windows Media Player and the Windows Media Center. QuickTime, on the other hand, is Apple's main video player, which is designed to play MOV files. However, there is a free and easy way to convert from one format to the other.
Instructions
-
-
1
Open your Internet browser and go to Media-Convert.com (see Resources).
-
2
Click on "Browse," located next to the empty "File" box. A window will pop up. Navigate to your WMV file and double-click on it.
-
-
3
Click on the drop-down menu underneath the square ad blocks that says "Windows Media Video (.wmv)" (it will be next to the Output Format drop-down menu that says "No Video Preset"). Of the choices that pop up, select "Apple Quicktime (.mov)."
-
4
Press the "OK" button to the left of the drop-down menu you just used. Your file will be uploaded to the website's server and then converted; this will take about 10 minutes, depending on the size of your file.
-
5
Select the link "yourfilename.mov" that appears when the video conversion is finished. The new MOV file will be downloaded to your computer.

Tips & Warnings
If your upload freezes, try Zamzar.com (see Resources), a similar service that sends file conversions straight to your email. Zamzar also has a paid subscription service that allows you to convert files of any size.
Media-Convert is only able to convert WMV files that are less than 150 MB. Check the size of your file by right-clicking on it and selecting "Properties."
