How to Clean a Steam Iron

If regular tap water is used in a steam iron, calcium crystals will form and collect in the water tank and steam vents. If these crystals are not removed, the appliance will quit functioning as a steam iron. These crystals can be removed with white vinegar.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Empty all of the water from the steam iron.

  2. Step 2

    Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1/2 cup water.

  3. Step 3

    Pour the vinegar/water solution into the reservoir and set the switch to steam.

  4. Step 4

    Allow the iron to emit steam for about four minutes.

    Using a Q-tip or pipe cleaner, brush calcium particles from the vents.

  6. Step 6

    Completely empty the reservoir and refill it with clean water. Allow the iron to steam for an additional four minutes, and then completely empty the reservoir.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for additional information.
  • Make sure the iron has completed its ejection of calcium deposits before ironing nice fabrics.
