How to Install Bathroom Sink Plumbing

Plumbing a new sink doesn't have to be difficult if you install the plumbing one step at a time. Most of the time when you install bathroom sink plumbing, you'll use PVC pipe for the waste pipes and copper pipe for the water supply. You may use chrome for the waste pipe if the plumbing shows. In that case, you'll follow the same directions, except you'll tighten the pipes with a wrench and put Teflon tape on the fittings before you do.

• Shut offs
• PVC fittings
• PVC pipe
• P-trap
• Adjustable wrench
• PVC primer
• PVC cement
• PVC saw
• Drain

1. Make sure you shut off the main water supply. Slide the compression nut over the water supply pipes. Slide on the beveled ring or ferrule. Insert the pipe into the end of the shut off, lift the nut to the threaded area and tighten it. Use an adjustable wrench and tighten firmly.

2. Attach the shut off on the other side. Make sure the handle on the shut off is on off position and turn the water back on to check for leaks. If there are no leaks, leave the water on using the shut offs under the sink.

3. Check the type of waste pipe you have coming out of the wall. If it has a threaded metal fitting in the wall, then use a PVC adapter. Put a male fitting on the pipe if it doesn't. Use primer first and then PVC cement.

4. Roll a snake of plumbers putty and put it around the drain opening in the sink. Insert the drain in the hole in the sink and put the rubber washer onto the drain stem, then a metal washer and finally put the nut on and tighten it. If you have a pop-up drain, install the tailpiece for the pop-up.

5. Put the threaded stems for the faucet into the openings in the sink. Put the nut that came with the faucet onto the threaded stem and tighten it down to the sink.

6. Insert the feed tubes into the shut offs and tighten down the nut. Put the other end into the faucet supply stem that you just tightened. Tighten it down.

7. Dry fit the P-trap onto the drain and tailpiece. If you need to use additional PVC pipe, cut it to fit. If it fits firmly, put primer and cement onto the end of the P-trap that fits into the wall connection and the fitting and hand tighten. Fit the other end onto the tailpiece and hand tighten.
