How to Make a Homemade Sandblaster

A sandblaster is usually used to take the finish or paint off something or add texture, but it also has offbeat uses, such as giving your jeans an old, worn look. If you want to use a sandblaster but do not have one, you can make a sandblaster at home with a few items that may already be in your garage. You will not need any technical or construction experience.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch rubber air gun hose
  • Air gun
  • Bucket
  • Sand
  • Duct or electrical tape
  • Protective clothing and goggles

Instructions

    • 1

Attach one end of your rubber air gun hose to the bottom of your air gun. Check the fit to make sure it is snug. If it is not, add some electrical tape or duct tape to seal any gaps and keep it in place.

    • 2

Take the other end of the rubber air gun hose and place it in the empty bucket so that it is almost touching the bottom. Tape the hose to the side of the bucket with electrical or duct tape. This will keep the hose in place while you are using your homemade sandblaster.

    • 3

Fill the bucket with sand. You can use as much or as little sand as you want, because you can add more to the bucket as it is needed.

    • 4

Before attempting to test your sandblaster, put on your protective clothing. Be sure that all of your skin is covered, including your head and hands, and you should be wearing goggles to keep sand out of your eyes. Cover any areas around the item that you are sandblasting that you do not want to sandblast. Aim the air gun handle of your homemade sandblaster, squeeze the trigger on your air gun and it will suck up sand from the bucket and shoot sand and air out of the nozzle of the air gun with a lot of force.
