How to Extend a Wooden Gatepost
If you'd like longer wooden gateposts in your garden fence, you can spare yourself the money and trouble of digging up the old posts--which is particularly problematic if the posts are set in concrete--and replacing them with new, longer posts. Instead, you can extend the gateposts already in place. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Wood beam (same width as your gatepost)
- Four 1-inch wood planks (width of each side of the gatepost)
- Hammer
- Nails
Instructions

1
Measure and cut the extending beam to the length you'd like.
-
2
Measure and cut the siding planks to the length of the entire new post: that is, the height of the old post plus the length of the extension.
-
-
3
Stack the extending post on top of the existing gatepost, making sure to align it properly. For extra stability during the construction, secure it to the bottom post with wood glue, a double-ended wood spike, or angled nails.
-
4
Brace the extension with the four planks, one on each side of the post. Nail these supporting planks one by one into the bottom post to hold them firm in supporting the upper post.
-
5
Nail the planks into the extending beam. Use at least two nails securing each plank into the extending beam and at least two nails securing each plank to the bottom post in total.
-
6
Paint or finish the new gatepost in the style of your preference.
