Things You'll Need:
- Lost Dog
- Patience
- rope or leash
- Dog treats
-
Step 1
Take a close look at the dog (from a distance of course) and decide if you want to try to catch the dog or if you should call animal patrol. An injured dog needs professional help, but a tiny dog or friendly pooch only won't be hard to help.
-
Step 2
If you decide to catch the dog to make sure it doesn't just wander off, then you need to rope him carefully around the neck. Depending on how friendly the dog is, start by sharing some dog treats at a distance and gradually push the treats closer to tie up the dog.
-
Step 3
As the lost dog might be nervous, be alert and talk to the dog in a soft voice. Animals can sense danger, so be strong and don't be worried. Check the animal for tags or any suggestion of a name of an owner.
-
Step 4
Once you have the dog, you need to immediately take pictures and place the photos in several places. You can immediately email the photos to the local animal shelter (do call them as well) and post online as well. Give a description of the dog to the animal shelter and your contact information so they can pass it on to the dog owners once they are found.
-
Step 5
If your lost dog is friendly, drive to the nearest veterinarian and ask them to scan the dog for a microchip. This is a free service provided by every veterinarian in the country. While you are there, ask if any of their doggie owners have called about losing a dog.
-
Step 6
Finally, get the dog home and allow it to have some food and water. Keep in ming the animal will be quite scared to a new environment so it may not be entirely comfortable the first night. Hopefully, you can find the owner within 24 hours so they can come pick up their dog!
-
Step 7
If the dog owner comes to pick up the lost dog, then your good dead is accomplished. After a few day, if the dog is still at your house, you need to decide if you are going to take it in to the humane society for care or continue to watch it. In most places there is a 30 hold for an animal to be reconnected with an owner. After that time, a new owner can legally adopt the dog.
