The best place to locate a signing agent is very similar to finding a notary public. In fact, they are both one and the same. For instance, a signing agent completes mortgage signings along with regular notarizations. This is relatively a new career within the past 15 years or so. Therefore, it is wise to know where to look.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Phone
  1. Step 1

Signing agents are trained beyond the regular Notary Public hours. They have more expertise in transactional documents and typically advertise their services in newspapers along with classified advertisements online. Craigslist, Oodle, and others can be used effectively.

  2. Step 2

The National Notary Association has a database that title companies and others have access for locating signing agents specifically. Call or check the Web site to learn more about how to use this.

  3. Step 3

Matchpoint is an online resource that will match companies that fit the description of the inquiry. This saves time and makes looking for a mobile signing agent much simpler. Another resource that is becoming popular is Twitter and Twellow. Twitter connects you with businesses and Twellow is linked with Twitter. It serves as a Yellow Pages type of resource.

  4. Step 4

Check the company or individual's Web site to determine their experience. For instance, the signing agent should have a logo on the Web site indicating that have completed the necessary training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to select a signing agent that is background screened by an independent party, like the National Notary Association. This adds a sense of credibility and legitimacy to the notarization.
  • When closing or refinancing, you may be able to make your own request for a signing agent that you are comfortable with. This may save the bank time and money too.
  • Never deal with a signing agent that offers to do a notarization under questionable circumstances. Back dating is an example. It may mean that their commission is not valid, or they could be inexperienced. Either way, this can cost you as the client.
