Walking along a country road in the West of Ireland

Imagine walking through rugged valleys, mountains and boglands, or soaking up the invigorating sounds and saltwater spray of the Atlantic Ocean waves. All that and more awaits visitors who choose a walking tour of the West of Ireland. There are several online companies that offer such tours. Read on for more information on taking a walking tour of the West of Ireland.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Credit card
  • Love of Ireland, and of course walking!
  1. Step 1

To find a suitable walking tour of the West of Ireland, it is best to review a number of tours available on the Internet. GoIreland.com is probably the best known of the travel companies that offer walking tours. Their tour of Galway and Mayo, for example, includes five days of eight-mile walks. Walkers leave from the charming town of Westport in County Mayo to tour that region's quiet country lanes, bogs and coastal paths, as well as to see Kylemore Abbey and the town of Leenane, made famous by the movie, The Field. Walkers continue on to Clare Island, the reputed home of Grace O’Malley, the pirate queen of Connacht.

  2. Step 2

Another walk that offers much more than exercise is the GoIreland.com walking tour of Connemara, the Burren and the Aran Islands. On the Burren, visitors explore the karst limestone pavements that are unique to this area and the wild and beautiful flowers and other plants that grow on this otherwise barren landscape.

  3. Step 3

If you're a hiker, check out the website WalkinghikingIreland.com. There you will discover some interesting walking/hiking tours such as walking tours of the Aran Islands and the Western Way tour, which gives participants a thoroughly detailed look at the rugged islands, where residents speak only Gaelic. During your walking tour, you'll visit Ireland's most important and unique prehistoric stone fort, dating back 2,500 years. Or, back on the mainland, you might want to follow an ancient piligrm's trail through the Maumturk Mountains and up to the sacred place called Maumeen, which is located near Maam Village, the place where The Quiet Man was filmed.

Tips & Warnings
  • While all of these walking tours offer similar experiences for the traveler, it is best to scrutinize the price that each company offers and then decide for yourself.
  • Remember to bring a light jacket, hiking boots and other equipment that will keep you dry, as Ireland is known for its showery weather!
  • Enjoy the opportunity to navigate an area of the world that is beautiful and in some cases still untouched by the modern world.
