Lower the temperature of your hot water heater.
For each 10 degrees you lower the setting, you should see 3% to 5% savings in energy costs. Manufacturers set the temperature at 140ºF, but a better setting may be 120ºF. Make sure that your dishwasher has a booster heater (most do) before setting the water temperature at 120ºF or you may not have great results.
Reducing your water temperature to 120ºF also limits mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes. The result will be additional savings on plumbing repairs and a longer lasting water heater. Also, you can save money by turning the water heater to the vacation setting or to a very low temperature setting when you are going to be away for more than a few days.

Get a tube of expanding insulation foam.
Cracks and leaks in your house structure result in wasted energy. Go into the basement or crawlspace and fill in all the gaps and holes you can find. Good places to look are around utility lines, near structural beams, drainage pipes, and windows. You can also use the expanding insulation between electrical boxes and switch boxes and the exterior wall of the house. Make sure you flip the breaker switch of each outlet or switch before you remove the cover to be safe.

If you have inside pets, brush them frequently.
When you brush your pets, their loose fur will come out on the brush, resulting in a cleaner house. Regular brushing will also save you money because you can stretch visits to your groomer.

The bulb life for fluorescent lights is related to the number of time you turn them off and on. If you will be coming back into a room within 15 minutes just leave fluorescent lights on.
