Parental controls are a great way to monitor and limit your children's computer activity. With Window's Vista setting up parental controls is now easier than ever and parents are given more control with the vista version of this utility than they were with previous versions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To begin make sure you are logged on to an administrator account and then go to start-control panel and then double click parental controls. When given the option to continue or cancel select continue. At this point a new screen will appear with a list of computer users.

  2. Step 2

Select the user account you wish to set parental controls for and when redirected to the parental controls screen select the option to turn parental controls on. Scroll down a bit further and select turn activity reporting on if you wish to be given information about the user's computer activity.

  3. Step 3

A little further down the screen you will see Window's vista web filter, if you select this option you will be able to set web restrictions for the user. For instance you can block certain websites based on their content ratings, specify a list of allowed or prohibited sites, and or block file downloads.

  4. Step 4

Once you have set the web restrictions select ok to be rerouted back to the parental control window, below web restrictions you will find an option labeled time limits. When inside this window you will be able to select days and times your child is not permitted to log on to their account. Blocked times are highlighted in blue.

  5. Step 5

Again when finished select ok. Below time limits you should see a game option. In this window you can specify if the user is allowed to play games on the computer and if so which games are appropriate either by rating or name.

  6. Step 6

Next select ok to view the allow or block specific programs. With this option you can allow the user access to all or only certain programs on your computer.

  7. Step 7

Finally select ok twice to enforce your parental controls.
