1
Find a suitable location for growing your potatoes. Because you're going above ground, you don't have to worry about an area with great drainage but you do want a location that has adequate sun. this location should have six hours of direct sunlight every day.
-
2
Lay down several layers of newspapers on the ground. Set your first tire on top of that.
-
-
3
Next into the tire set two seed potatoes directly onto the newspapers. set potatoes toward the center of the tire but about 4 inches or so apart.
-
4
Now, fill that first tire full of compost. Be sure to fill the tire totally full of the compost. Water the potatoes well. Allow the potato plants to grow until the potatoes are have grown taller than the tire.
-
5
Add the second tire. Fill in the tire with yard wastes. These yard wastes can be aged sawdust (aged for at least a year) last autumn's leaves that have been chopped using the lawn mower, or grass clippings from the yard that have been allowed to dry for a couple of days. The best results would of course be a mixture of all three types of yard waste. Fill in around potato plant. It's okay if leaves are covered by the mulching material.
-
6
Using same method that you did with the second tire, add the third and fourth tires as the plant grows.
-
7
After you've finished the last tire, allow the potato plant to continue to grow and water whenever the soil begins to get dry. The potato plants will bloom and after blooming will die back. Allow the potatoes to die. After the plants are dead, it is time to harvest the potatoes.
-
8
To harvest the potatoes, simply flip the top tire off and pick up any potatoes you see, then flip the next and continue picking up potatoes until you've reached the bottom of the bottom tire.
-
9
Allow the potatoes to dry in the sun for a couple of days then move to a cool dry location for storage.
-
10
Spread compost from growing the potatoes on garden areas where you won't be growing potatoes, tomatoes, peppers or eggplants to avoid the spread of diseases.
-
11
Once you've grown potatoes this way, you'll grown your potatoes this way all the time. It is so simple.
