How to Make a Flower Arrangement Using Artificial Flowers

A well-structured artificial flower arrangement created with quality flowers, stems and greenery and placed in an interesting container or vase will add a touch of elegance to any room in the home. Artificial flower arrangements are versatile, easily stored when not in use and easily updated at any time with the addition of different flower stems and colors to create an entirely new arrangement.

Things You'll Need:

• Assorted silk flowers
• Assorted dried flowers
• Assorted greenery
• Flower container
• Foam block
• 1 bag of moss (gray or green)
• Floral stem clippers
• Hot glue

1. Designing the style of the flower arrangement is the first step in making an arrangement. Use a sketchpad and colored markers, pencils or crayons to do a simple layout design of the desired look and color scheme of the arrangement.

2. 

   Select artificial flowers that are of good quality. Silk and dried flowers are the primary types of flowers used in artificial arrangements. Silk flowers may have stems wrapped in florist tape, giving an authentic look, and will hold up longer than dried flowers. Dried flowers are naturally dried buds and flowers. They can be used in arrangements alone or with silk flowers.

3. 

   Use a foam block to secure the flower stems in place if using a short container such as a basket or metal flowerpot. Use hot glue or crafters glue to secure the foam to the container. Trim or cut the block according to the dimensions of the container. For large containers, such as wicker baskets, multiple blocks may be necessary.
   
   Arrangements in tall containers, such as vases or pitchers, use a foam block cut wedged into the vase for flower support. For arrangements using a large variety of flowers, the height of the container alone will support the arrangement.

4. Spread a thin layer of moss over the top of the foam and around the sides to fill in between the block and the container. Insert each stem into the foam block. Use the wire clippers to remove excess leaves or to trim the length of the stem. Securely place the tallest flowers in the middle of the block as the primary focal point of the arrangement.

5. Continue to place flowers throughout the foam base alternating between height, flower type and flower color if working with multiple varieties. For arrangements utilizing one flower type and color, whether silk or dried, arrange the flowers according to height. Cut stems to create shorter flowers so the arrangement is uniform and well rounded.

6. Add greenery such as grass stems, ferns and reeds along with baby's breath or statice as filler flowers once all of the primary flowers are in place. Fill in around the base of the flower stems with moss to cover any exposed foam and to add a final touch to the flower arrangement.

Tips & Warnings

• When creating flower arrangements, it is a good idea to look at the arrangement from all directions. The sides and back of the arrangement should be as uniform and full of color and flowers as the front.
• Placing artificial flower arrangements in direct sunlight will cause silk flowers to fade.
