** Take maximum security precautions **
Make sure not to risk children's safety by creating a website for children. Be especially careful if the children are young or if they are not your own.
To be safest, general guidelines include:
* Don't include real personal information about the kids online - don't include last name, home address, name of school, phone number, etc.
* Only give out the website html address to close friends and relatives.
* For young children, monitor incoming email
* If possible, password protect the website so only approved visitors can enter.
* Include tags in the website coding to tell search engine robots not to index the site.
* Visit the US Dept of Justice for information on child's safety on the net (see resources)

5
Order a domain name and sign up for website hosting.
Any cheap website hosting will probably do. Choose a domain name that has to do with the theme of your website. Again, don't include personal information in the website domain name. -
6
Decide what website creation software you will use.
Your website host will probably include a free website builder that is simple to use. If you have programming or html experience, you can build a website from scratch. -
7
Build a homepage for the kids' website.
First you will want to build a homepage for your kids. This should talk about your child (or children) and include some basic pictures. Also include navigation to other pages of the site.
-
8
Build additional webpages for the website.
The webpages you build are up to you.
Examples include:
* If you have a website about many children, you can include a webpage for each child.
* If you have a hobby website, create pages for various projects
* If you have a child's biography website, include a page for each year of his/her life -
9
Add a "what's new" page.
Include a webpage (or blog) where you write about the news relating to the children and the website theme.
-
10
Add contact information.
Add a contact form or email address. For young children have this forward to your email so you can monitor and make sure messages are appropriate.
Do not give out this contact information publicly!
Do not give out other contact information such as telephone number or physical address!
