A quality gun case is a necessity for any firearm owner. Most states require a gun to be kept in a locked case when being transported unless you have a concealed weapons permit. An insulated storage case can also protect your gun from scratches and damage. Follow these easy steps to build a basic locking gun case out of wood.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Half-inch-thick wood
  • Electric saw
  • Wood glue
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Paintbrush
  • Weather stripping tape (optional)
  • Hinges
  • Lock
  • Wood screws
  • 2-inch-thick foam
  • Rubber cement
  1. Step 1

Decide on the size of your gun case. It should be at least an inch longer than the gun on each side.

  2. Step 2

Cut two pieces of half-inch-thick wood according to the measurements you chose in Step 1. Cut side pieces from the wood that are 2 1/2 inches wide.

  3. Step 3

Use wood glue to attach the side pieces to each of the large wooden panels. This will give you two small boxes that are 2 1/2 inches deep.

  4. Step 4

Apply paint or wood stain to the pieces of the gun case. The inside of the gun case can be left unfinished since it will not be visible. Allow the finish to dry overnight before assembling the case.

  5. Step 5

Attach weather stripping tape around the edges of each half of the gun case if you want it to be airtight. This step is not necessary if you will not be carrying the case in areas where moisture may seep in.

  6. Step 6

Set the two sides of the gun case together with the open ends facing each other. Use wood screws to attach hinges 2 inches in from the edge of the case.

  7. Step 7

Open the case and attach a lock of your choice to the side opposite the hinges. The latching mechanism should be attached to one half of the gun case and the receiver to the other half. Attach a handle to one side of the gun case if you wish.

  8. Step 8

Measure and cut two pieces of 2-inch-thick foam to line the inside of each half of the gun case. Use rubber cement to glue the foam pieces to the wood. Leave the gun case open overnight so the rubber cement can dry.
