How to Store Bee Pollen Granules

Bee pollen is considered to be a "superfood," high in nutrients and purported to greatly increase energy and vitality when taken regularly. While it is sometimes available for purchase in capsules or even pills, bee pollen is usually purchased and consumed in bulk as small granules that can be sprinkled over foods or incorporated into smoothies. The commonly accepted wisdom is that heat-treated or particularly crunchy bee pollen granules should be avoided in favor of freeze-dried granules, which are supposed to retain more of their nutritional value.

Instructions

    • 1

Store your bee pollen in a cool, dry place; the refrigerator is ideal, although if you won't be using the pollen quickly you can freeze it to lengthen its life.

    • 2

Seal your bee pollen in a plastic or glass container. An amber container or other colored material that helps prevent light from penetrating to the pollen will help preserve it for longer.

    • 3

Purchase pollen that has been frozen until the point of packaging and, ideally, is still frozen at the time of purchase--it will last longer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consume bee pollen as quickly as possible. While there is no consensus on exactly how long it takes for pollen to lose its nutritional value, most agree that this happens very quickly. It's best to purchase in small batches in order to get the freshest product.
