How to Configure a Terminal Services Client

Here's how to connect to a Windows server running terminal services using the remote desktop connection application that is included with Windows operating systems.

Things You'll Need

• You will need Windows XP, or higher connected to the Internet and permission to log on to a Windows server. You also will need log-on credentials---user name and password---and the IP address. Finally, be sure to have the port that terminal services is listening on.

Instructions

Open and Configure RDP

1. Click on "Start."

2. Right-click on "All Programs."

3. Click on "Accessories."

4. Choose "Remote Desktop Connection," and click. This will bring up a dialog box with information needed to connect to the Windows server.

5. Enter the IP address for the Window server in the "General" tab.

6. Next, input user name, and check the "Allow Me to Save Credentials" box.

7. Click the "Save" button, and enter file name in the "Save As" box. This will allow you connect to this server again without re-entering the information.

Tips & Warnings

• To connect to this server in the future, follow Steps 1 through 4 and click on "Open" to select the file saved in Step 6. The server administrator may change the port that terminal services uses. There is no dialog box choice for changing the port. You will have to find the file created in Step 7 and open it in Notepad. Once the file is open, add or edit the following line: server port:i:xxxx, with xxxx being the port number from the server admin. There are other tabs on the RDP dialog box. Select these options according to instructions from the system admin, or personal preferences.
