How to Build a Stereo Speaker
The process of designing a stereo speaker from the ground up requires expertise in engineering, acoustics, materials engineering and materials science. However, it's certainly possible for the average person to make a solid set of sturdy, reliable stereo speakers that will provide good performance. The speakers sketched out here are perfect for applications like a garage, hobby shop or work room.
Things You'll Need
- 3/4-inch MDF (medium-density fiberboard)
- Pair of 5 1/4-inch two-way car speakers
- Two terminal cups
- Speaker wire
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Circular or table saw
- Jig saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut two pieces of MDF to the dimensions of 7 by 12 inches. These will be the front and rear panels of the speaker enclosure.
-
2
Cut two pieces of MDF to the dimensions of 6 by 12 inches. These will be the side panels.
-
-
3
Cut two pieces of MDF to the dimensions of 5 1/2 by 7 inches. These will be the tops and bottoms.
-
4
Cut an opening, centered in the front panel, for one of your speakers. Use the speaker as a template for the size of the opening you'll need.
-
5
Cut an opening in the lower center of the back panel for the terminal cup. Use the cup as a template for the size of the opening.
-
6
Assemble the side and top panels together. Place them so that the side panels overlap the top and bottom panels. Attach the panels together with wood screws and wood glue.
-
7
Mount the front and rear panels onto the assembled pieces, attaching them with wood glue and wood screws.
-
8
Attach a piece of speaker wire to the back tabs of the terminal cup. Feed the wire into the opening for the terminal cup, and then mount the cup into the opening with wood screws.
-
9
Attach the other end of the speaker wire to the tabs of the speaker, and then mount the speaker into the opening with wood screws.
