How to Use a Network Hub With Ubuntu

Ubuntu is an easy-to-use distribution of Linux that is small enough to be installed on laptops and older systems without sacrificing system speed or function. As an operating system installed on systems built for mobility, it can be beneficial to be able to add it to your home network at any time. If your home network needs to be expanded, this can be done with the use of a network hub.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the network modem and router to introduce the hub into the network setup. Run an Ethernet cord from the router to the hub.

    • 2

Plug any network devices into the hub using Ethernet cables. The router's free Ethernet ports can also be used.

    • 3

Power on the modem, router and network hub. Also power on all connected devices. You may need to power cycle the modem and router again so the hub is correctly introduced into the network.

    • 4

Access your Ubuntu device. Depending on your distribution, you may see an icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen indicating a connection. Open your Internet browser to test the connection.

    • 5

Manually set up the connection if you are using special settings such as custom IP or DNS settings. Otherwise, Ubuntu will automatically recognize the connection through the hub.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your connection is not recognized and you are not using custom settings, power cycle your device again. This will cause Ubuntu to rescan available connections.
