How to Install an Insulated Pane in an Aluminum Window Frame

Most modern vinyl or aluminum insulated glass windows are double pane, which means they have a barrier of air or inert gas such as argon. The gas is contained between the glass panes by a seal that surrounds the edges of the glass. When this seal goes bad, moisture can collect between the panes and cause condensation. Installing an insulated pane in an aluminum frame window will require removing the old glass from the window or sash.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove the window panel from the sash. If the window panel is stationary the screws located at the top and bottom of the panel will need to be removed with a screwdriver. A sliding panel can be removed by lifting up on the panel and pulling on the bottom to release it from the track.

  2. Step 2

Extract the old pane of glass from the sash. Disassemble the window frame by using a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the panel together. Tap on the sash with a rubber mallet to separate it from the glass.

  3. Step 3

Examine the sash to see if there are any rubber stops or spacers in the corners of the sash. If any are found set them aside because they will be needed when installing the new pane of glass.

  4. Step 4

Insert the rubber stops back into the sash and place it around the new pane of glass. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver to secure the glass in the sash.

  5. Step 5

Use a caulk gun to apply the caulk or sealant to the window. Run a bead of caulk around the edge sash and the glass. This will provide a barrier against moisture as well as cushioning the glass against the sash.

  6. Step 6

Insert the panel back in the frame opening and replace the screws, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • All materials can be purchased at a home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot. Place the frame on a table or flat surface before removing the glass pane.
  • Always wear heavy gloves when working with pieces of glass. Do not use ordinary window putty to seal the glass pane to the sash.
