How to Make a Viking Hat

How to Make a Viking Hat thumbnail
Viking re-enactors prepare to do battle. Notice their helmets have no horns.

Vikings bring to mind fearsome warriors of ages past who pillaged and plundered like ancient pirates. For kids who like to dress up and play, or adults who like to root for a particular football team, a good Viking helmet is a necessity. It only takes a few minutes to make your own Viking helmet (minus the historically inaccurate horns).

Things You'll Need

  • Old gray t-shirt
  • Roll of duct tape
  • Gray poster board
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Black felt-tip pen

Instructions

    • 1

Drape a t-shirt over your head so that the neck hole runs around the top of your head and the shirt drapes down over your ears and back.

    • 2

Wrap a strip of duct tape around the shirt where you want the bottom of your helmet to be. Continue wrapping the duct tape around your head until you reach the top.

    • 3

Make a small cone from the poster board about 4 inches high. Tape this to the top of your helmet, and cover it in duct tape.

    • 4

Cut a nose piece from the poster board. This will be a T-shape that is slightly wider than your face and as long as from your forehead to your upper lip. The top should be straight across, while the bottom sides of the T should arch upward (these will be positioned over your eyes). You can shape the length of the T with a point at the end, and round it off.

    • 5

Tape the top (flat edge) of the nose piece to the front of the helmet. When you put the helmet on, the length of the nose piece should lie across your eyes.

    • 6

Draw chains (rows of Us) across the outside of the rest of the t-shirt so that it resembles chain mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a black marker like a Sharpie to draw studs, lines or other designs you like on the helmet.
