Make Your Own iPod Case

If you're sick of getting your iPod all dinged up but don't want to pay the hefty prices for a Mac-manufactured iPod sock, you just need a few items from your local fabric store and from around the house. If you are making your iPod case as a gift, check the Apple website for iPod measurements. Keep your iPod out of harm's way and give it a cute makeover at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your iPod. You can use your iPod as a tracing template if you have it handy, or measure your iPod and take down the dimensions so you can work on the case without your iPod in hand.

    • 2

Make a template of your iPod in clear acetate and cut it to size. You can draw details, like the screen and click wheel, with a Sharpie or colored pencil.

    • 3

Center your template over a piece of felt. Leave several inches around all sides of the template to allow for the width and back of your iPod. Cut out the window and click wheel on the felt design and loosely cut out the felt design, leaving room all sides.

    • 4

Center your felt design over the fabric. Trace the design exactly and cut out the fabric in the same manner as the felt.

    • 5

Sew together the fabric and the felt, with the fabric pattern facing out. Sew a small square of clear vinyl over the felt side to cover the window and click wheel of the case.

    • 6

Fold the felt and fabric over your iPod and trim the excess fabric and felt as necessary. Sew around the perimeter of the iPod.

    • 7

Make a mark with the Sharpie where the headset jack and the "hold" button should come through the case. Cut around the area with scissors and sew around the seam.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find most of the items on your list at your local fabric or craft store, like Jo-Ann or Michaels. You will only need a small amount of each material, so using scraps from a previous project will also work. You can use either a sewing machine or a needle and thread to complete this project.

  • Keep needles out of the reach of children.
