Baseball hats have been around for more than 140 years, and the style has been adopted by many organizations. Baseball hats created uniformity in baseball teams when they were permanently added as part of the uniform in 1954. By the 1970s, baseball fans began showing support and team spirit by wearing their own baseball hats with their favorite team's logo on the front.

Today, an average baseball hat costs around $30. To save money, make money or just show your support in a personal way, you can create your own baseball hat for a fraction of the cost.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • 36-inch-square sheet of polyester fabric in your team's color
  • Scissors
  • Drill
  • 4 open buttons
  • 1 closed button
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • 4-inch-by-10-inch piece of clothing rubber
  • Team logo patch
  1. Step 1

Measure the circumference of your head with a tape measure. Then, measure the distance between your forehead and your temple, for the visor.

  2. Step 2

On the polyester fabric sheet, draw a circle with a circumference slightly larger than your head's circumference, and then create four triangles within the circle.

  3. Step 3

Cut the triangles out and place them on top of each other. Drill a hole in the top section of each triangle, making sure they are lined up perfectly. Sew an open button onto each hole.

  4. Step 4

Pick up the triangle sections of polyester fabric and fold them into a hat shape, with the open button holes meeting at the top. To stabilize this shape, place the material around a small bowl and safety pin the sections together. Then sew each section together.

  5. Step 5

Attach the closed button to the top part of your hat, to keep the four triangles in place. Hide this button by covering it with extra polyester fabric.

  6. Step 6

Bend the clothing rubber sheet into a U shape for the visor. Cover the rubber with the same polyester fabric, or use a different color for more style. Sew this visor onto the front of the hat.

  7. Step 7

Sew your team's logo patch onto the front of your hat. Make sure it's directly in the center.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may need to stop in multiple textile stores before you find the high-quality polyester fabric and the clothing rubber. The team logo can be found at a local sports store. If you can't find these desired materials, you can replace polyester fabric with sheets of muslin, and replace the rubber with buckram and a wire. If you want a hat that can be resized, cut a two-inch opening in the back of the hat and attach a clip or elastic closure to allow you to increase and decrease the width. Sew hemlines onto the outer edges of the hat or visor for more style, and turn the hat inside out and whipstitch the seams down for more body.
