How to Estimate the Amount of Tile Needed for a Floor
Before beginning a home improvement project, take time to understand the full scope of work involved. A central aspect to understanding this scope is calculating the amount of material needed to complete the work. A floor-tiling project particularly involves the need to accurately estimate the amount of tile needed. Often, floor tile is custom ordered or is extremely expensive. An accurate estimate will ensure you are buying a sufficient amount of tile but not so much that some will go to waste. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Estimate the Amount of Tile Needed for a Floor
-
1
Determine the area where you wish to install the new tile. Take measurements of the floor, making sure to record the measurement in inches since tile is specified by inches. To ensure accurate readings, lay a string along the corners of the floor and mark the floor's length on the string. A string can follow the perimeter of the floor easier than a tape measure. You can then measure the marked points directly off the string.

2
Now, sketch the outline of your floor on grid paper. Although you do not need perfect scale, use the grids to achieve a shape as close as possible to the actual floor. If you already have a tiled floor, let each grid on the paper represent a tile for more accurate scale. Label each side of the floor with it's measurement (in inches) directly on the sketch.

Determine the tile you wish to install in the area. Be sure to verify the cost, durability, and maintenance requirements of the material. Also, obtain the specific measurements for an individual piece of tile. Determine the amount of grout you wish to install in-between tiles. Don't forget to add the width of the grout spacing to the tile's dimensions.

Draw in the new tile on your grid-paper floor plan. It is typically best to divide the floor into sections (maybe thirds) and plot each section at a time . This will allow for easier control. You can verify you are plotting accurately by first calculating the amount of tile that will fit the floor. Simply divide the length and width of the floor by the length and width of the tile. Again, don't forget to add the grout's width to the tile's dimensions.

Once you have laid out your tile on your grid plan, you should notice if you will require any partial tiles (cut to a fraction of their size). Provide your order to your supplier and add 10% for future attic stock. Tile can wear and crack and you should ensure you have replacements on hand so you can repair the flooring.

Tips & Warnings
Measure each dimension twice, this prevents inaccurate ordering and rework.
