How to Install a Mantel Without a Fireplace

Installing a mantel in your house can be a simple task, especially when there is no fireplace involved. Because there is no fireplace, you don't have to be concerned with keeping measurements "to code," because there will be no heat. This allows you to install your mantel where ever you want. Whether you have made a mantel shelf yourself or have come across a beautiful rustic piece of wood, installing a mantel without a fireplace shouldn't take more than an hour for the actual process. Take your time, however, when choosing your brackets and prepping the mantel, if needed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mantel shelf or large board at least 8 inches wide
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Two 6-inch mounting brackets with screws
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Sand, paint or stain the mantel before you begin. The standard wood mantel is a classic, but you may prefer to paint it a solid white or go with more bold color choices. Let the mantel dry for at least 12 hours before you begin to install it.

  2. Step 2

Determine where you want to install the mantel. While most mantels are placed in the direct center of a wall, others can be located to one side to allow for easier traffic flow. If choosing the center of the wall, measure carefully and mark the exact point where you want the mantel installed.

  3. Step 3

Determine the height of the mantel. The average fireplace puts a mantel shelf at eye level. You may want to use that height, or raise or lower your mantel depending on preference. Hold your mantel to the wall and use your level to find a position for it at the height you want. Mark a horizontal line all the way across the bottom edge of the mantel.

  4. Step 4

Mark the location of your brackets on the wall, as well as on the underside of the mantel. Usually, having the brackets rest under the mantel and 6 to 12 inches in from the edges will hold the mantel in place and allow for a fireplace in the future. Mark the points through the bracket where the screws will go.

  5. Step 5

Pre-drill into the wall at the bracket screw points and into the underside of the mantel. Attach the brackets to the wall by holding them to their point and screwing in the screws. Once both brackets are in place, have a friend hold the mantel over the brackets while you line up the screw placements. Screw the mantel to the brackets.

  6. Step 6

Complete your finished look by adding a large painting or mirror above the mantel, and placing decorative pieces of your choice on the mantel. Your decor, furniture and fabrics can also enhance the way the mantel stands out in the room or blends in with the total look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't rush out and buy the first bracket you see unless you love it. When seated facing the mantel, you and your guests will see the brackets. Choose something that complements your decor and your sense of style.
