How to Restore an HP Pavilion Laptop
If you have an HP Pavilion laptop, you may run into an error that requires that you restore the computer to its original factory settings. You may, for example, receive an error message indicating that you need a system restore due to a corrupted boot sector and other boot problems. A system restore will involve deleting all of the information that you have stored on your hard drive and reformatting the hard drive of the HP Pavilion to its original settings. In order to restore an HP Pavilion laptop, you will need to use all of the original discs that came with the computer.

1
Disconnect all external devices from your HP Pavilion laptop. If you have any important data saved to the computer's hard drive, you should save this information to a CD-ROM or zip drive prior to the restore.
-
2
Put the first Windows operating system (OS) disc that you have into your laptop's CD drive. Restart the computer and wait for the "Restore" menu to appear on your screen at start up once it reads the disc.

3
Select "Recover" from the menu options. You will have two types of restoration choices: either completely erase all programs and files on the hard drive and restore the factory settings or perform a system recovery and restore Windows without deleting all of your program files.
-
4
Insert the second Windows installation CD when prompted during the restore process. The system restore for the HP Pavilion may take some time depending on the type of recovery you selected. Once the mode has completed, Windows will restart. At that time, you may have to reenter the licensing information for your version of the OS.

5
Reinstall any software that has been removed as a result of the system restore of your laptop. You can now insert the disc that you used to save your data and transfer it back onto your hard drive. This is a good time to update both your version of Windows with any service packs as well as your antivirus software with current definitions.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not have the disc for a system restore on the HP laptop, you can still enter the "Recovery Module" by typing the following into the "Run" menu "d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons." You can do this as long as you have used the OS disks to previously install the program. Otherwise, you need to access the "Recovery Module" from the Windows OS disks.
