How to Use Chkdsk

Chkdsk is a utility included with Windows XP to scan and correct errors in the disk. Problems usually arise from system crashes or incorrect shut downs. Chkdsk can be used to automatically scan and attempt to correct any errors that it finds.

  • Windows XP

    How to Use the Chkdsk Utility

  1. Step 1

    Select "My Computer" and right-click on the drive that needs to be scanned. The "My Computer" selection can be accessed through the desktop icon or the Start bar.

  2. Step 2

    Select "Properties" in the menu that opens when you right-click the drive that needs to be checked. This brings up a tabbed menu.

  3. Step 3

    Click the second tab from the left. It should be called "Tools." You will see an area titled "Error-Checking."

  4. Step 4

    Click "Check Now." The scan does not start immediately. You can now change options for the scan that will run.

  5. Step 5

    Check to fix file system errors automatically unless you would like to attempt recovery of bad sectors. Once you have selected your options, click "Start."

Tips & Warnings
  • The Chkdsk utility could take several hours to run, depending on the size of the drive you scan.
