How to Treat Acne Conglobata
Acne conglobata is one of a few severe forms of the skin disorder acne. Of all acne types, it is the most severe and is usually found in young men. It often begins in men ages 18 to 30, and it can persist for a long period of time. Because acne conglobata can cause severe scarring, it is important to keep the condition under treatment for as long as it persists.

Seek out a dermatologist for treatment of acne conglobata. The most effective treatment for this form of acne is a prescription medication called isotretinoin. Known as Accutane, it a pill treatment that is derived from vitamin A. Isotretinoin is only prescribed for severe cases of acne.

Take the isotretinoin for the full course of treatment. This can be for as long as 20 weeks. When taken for its full prescribed course, isotretinoin can cause acne conglobata to go into remission for long periods of time. The acne will return in some people, but in others it can cure acne completely.

Follow any other regimens prescribed by the dermatologist. Isotretinoin works on the inside by causing the body to produce less oil. Some dermatologists also prescribe a topical treatment such as a prescription topical treatment or an over-the counter cleanser to be used at the same time as the oral treatment. Typical topical treatments often include a morning treatment and a night treatment to reduce breakouts.

Sign up for the iPledge program if you are a woman taking isotretinoin. The oral treatment for acne conglobata causes severe birth defects and can trigger miscarriage in patients. Patients who take it must pledge to take steps not to become pregnant during their treatment. In the United States, only doctors who are part of the iPledge program can prescribe the treatment, and only pharmacists who are members of the program can dispense it.
