A basement will lose heat if it is not insulated, and one way to insulate a basement is to build a new wall. Framing a new wall sometimes means working around obstacles such as windows. Framing around basement windows can be done by creating a box within the new wall frame.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Framing nails
  1. Step 1

Measure the dimensions of the basement to determine the size of the new wall. Use a tape measure to obtain the width and height of the existing wall, including the dimensions of the window.

  2. Step 2

Purchase 2-by-4 pieces of lumber at a home improvement store. Horizontal pieces are going to be needed for the width of the wall, as well as vertical pieces for studs. Extra pieces will also be needed to frame around the window opening.

  3. Step 3

Cut the 2-by-4 boards to the lengths that are needed. Make sure the boards used for the vertical studs are the same length.

  4. Step 4

Assemble the frame by putting the 2-by-4 boards together. Put the center studs 16 inches apart between the two horizontal boards. Use a tape measure to accurately space out the width needed between each stud.

  5. Step 5

Mark the vertical studs where the window will be, using a pencil and tape measure. Use a saw to cut the vertical studs, and place a horizontal board at the top and bottom where the studs were cut. If the window is at the top of the wall, a horizontal board will be needed only on the bottom studs.

  6. Step 6

Attach all of the boards using framing nails. Place the frame against the basement wall when nailing the boards together. Lift the frame into place after it is completely assembled.

Tips & Warnings
  • A nail gun will make securing the boards much faster.
  • Boards that are not straight should not be used to frame a wall.
