If you see coolant leaking out from under your car's dashboard or if no hot air is being blown out though the car's vents, you may have a heater core problem. Buying a few new tools and replacing the core yourself will be less expensive than having a costly mechanic replace it for you. Some car models have heater cores that can be very hard to gain access to, while others can be readily accessed by removing a cover. Purchasing a car repair manual prior to attempting automobile repair work can save you a lot of time and money. Repair manuals will inform you if any specialty tools will be required to remove a heater core from a vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up your car's hood and locate the heater core. If you are not sure where the core is located, an auto parts store employee or a repair manual can help.

    • 2

Remove the screws or bolts that hold the heater core in place. You may need to remove other parts of the car before being able to access the heater core.

    • 3

Disconnect the intake and outtake hoses from the heater core. You may need a special tool to remove the couplings that connect the hoses to the heater core; refer to your car model's repair manual.

    • 4

Remove the heater core. Be careful not to tip the core over, as coolant will leak out.

    • 5

Reconnect the upstream and downstream hoses on the new heater core in the same matter that they were attached to the faulty core. Leaks can occur if the hoses are not connected properly.

    • 6

Screw or bolt new heater core in place. Finally, replace all of the removed car parts.
