How to Clean the Inside of Tanker Cars

Cleaning the inside of a tanker car is not a job for a "weekend warrior"--this is a job for a skilled professional. Cleaning a tanker car requires heavy-duty steam cleaning equipment and the proper permits for the disposal of the waste water. If you have the proper equipment and know how to dispose of the waste products, then cleaning tanker cars can be a very profitable line of work.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a hose to the tank car's drain valve and position the hose to empty into an approved collection tank. Open the drain valve.

    • 2

Lower your steam cleaning equipment (with a degreaser) into the tank car. Enter the tank car wearing a bio-hazard suit with a breathing tank.

    • 3

Steam clean inside the tank with a degreaser. Allow the waste water to exit through the drain valve. Inspect the tank as you clean, making certain that all deposits are cleaned off by the high-pressure steam.

    • 4

Steam clean the tank a second time using plain water without a degreaser. Wash all of the degreaser out of the tank car.

    • 5

Remove the steam cleaning equipment and exit the car. Do NOT close all valves--leave the entry hatch open as the car dries.

    • 6

Close the drain valve, remove the hose, and properly dispose of the waste water following all EPA directives.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do NOT seal the tanker car after steam cleaning. Changes in air pressure as the car cools could cause the car to crush.
