1. Know yourself. A soul mate is generally considered to be someone with whom you share a feeling of deep love, affinity, intimacy and spirituality--a kindred spirit. It will be impossible to recognize your soul mate if you do not first know yourself. Evaluate your life, identify your goals, recognize where your happiness lies and come to terms with what you want to get out of your life. You must know these things about yourself before you can begin to appreciate similar qualities in another person.

2. Avoid a sense of desperation. "Biological clock ticking! Gotta have someone to love!" Men and women can sense desperation in one another, and there is no bigger turn-off. Send out a vibe that says you have plenty of suitors, even if you don't. Lose the desperation and go about the business of living your life. Accept that you can have a complete and happy life even if you never find your soul mate.

3. Have realistic expectations. Finding perfect suitability may be impossible since none of us is perfect. Instead, accept good suitability. You stand a reasonable chance of finding someone of good suitability in your school class, work place, church or other social circles. Perhaps Mr. or Ms. Nearly Perfect will come to you when you least expect it.

4. Live your life. Stop being so frantic about what others think and whether you've found your soul mate. Pursue your daily life of work, play and social interaction, but do it to enjoy yourself and those around you, not for the purpose of finding a soul mate. Don't try so hard to make love happen.

5. Foster friendships first. If you spend your time desperately searching for your soul mate, you are likely to kiss a lot of frogs. Instead, spend your energy fostering long-lasting friendships.
