How to Measure the Volume of a Lunch Box

The volume of an object is the amount of space it occupies. Depending on the shape of the item, you use a specific formula. Typically, a lunch box is rectangular. Therefore, you would use the formula for a rectangle. You can use a tape measure or a ruler to obtain the initial measurements for your type of lunch box.

Instructions

1. Use the measuring tape to obtain the length, width and height. Lay the lunch box flat on the bottom side. Calculate the length. Measure the box from the right side to the left side. Obtain the width by measuring top back corner to top front corner. Then calculate the height. This is the measurement from the bottom of the lunch box to the top.

2. Learn the formula for calculating the volume. For a rectangle shape, you multiply the length, width and height. For other types of shapes, see the reference section.

3. Multiply the measurements from step 1. The measurements for a lunch box with length of 10 inches, width of 4 inches and height of 12 inches would be 480 cubic inches. Multiply 10*4*12.
