How to Hide a File Extension on a Mac

By default, the Mac OS X operating system will automatically show file extensions next to icons for certain types of files. If you'd rather hide the extension for a specific file, you can change the icon's preferences and prevent the extension from showing up after the file's name.

Things You'll Need

• Mac running OS X 10.4 or later

Instructions

1. Click on the Finder icon in the Dock to open a new Finder window.

2. Navigate to the location of the file whose extension you want to hide.

3. Right-click on the file's icon and choose "Get Info."

4. Check the box next to "Hide Extension" in the file's information window.

5. Close the information window to save the settings. The file's extension will now be hidden.
