A Halti head collar is a temporary training tool designed to help you teach your dog polite on-leash walking. The structure of the collar prevents your dog from pulling on his leash; excessive forward force from the dog redirects his head to the side or toward the ground. Using a Halti correctly requires that you fit it properly to your dog’s head and follow all safety precautions.
Place the Halti collar on your dog’s head to ensure it fits. The noseband should sit on the snout halfway between the nose and eyes. The neck strap must be tight enough not to slip over the head but loose enough to hang away from your dog’s skin. Your dog should be able to bark and pant comfortably even while wearing the Halti; if your dog cannot open his mouth, the Halti is either too small or too tight.
Play with your dog while he wears the Halti to help him get used to the feel. Offer him treats or play with his favorite toys so he’ll learn to associate the Halti with good things. Redirect his attention if he attempts to remove, chew or fixate on the Halti.
Connect your leash to the lower ring on the Halti. This ring should hang below your dog’s chin; it serves as the Halti’s main leverage point.
Walk with your dog around your home or backyard while he gets comfortable with the Halti. Reward him for good behavior, and keep sessions brief and fun. Once he’s used to the Halti, you’re ready to take him on a real walk around the block and beyond.
