Having a well functioning ice augur will make your ice fishing outings much more enjoyable. One of the most common problems that people face when dealing with their ice augurs is a dull blade. This is especially true if you are still using a manual ice augur which can make drilling your hole extremely strenuous. Whether you have a manual, electric, or gas augur this sharpening method is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to sharpen your blade.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand-held ice auger blade sharpener
  1. Step 1

Determine which type of blades your ice augur has. They can be either straight or curved. The type of blade will determine the type of hand-held ice auger blade sharpener that you need. (For blade sharpener providers refer to the link in the resources section of this article.)

  2. Step 2

Hold the sharpener so that the blade's guard is protecting your hand and the sharpener is at a 90-degree angle in relation to the ice auger blade.

  3. Step 3

Place the tip of the sharpener onto the inside of the ice auger blade and run the sharpener up the blade.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the previous step three times for each side of the ice auger blade.

Tips & Warnings
  • To get a more professional sharpening you might consider removing the blades from the ice auger and placing them in a vise. This will help steady the ice auger blade and create more resistance for the sharpener.
