In-line vents are used to add air to a drain that does not drain well. Installing an in-line vent in a kitchen sink is quick and economical, especially when compared to the alternative of installing a vent stack from the kitchen sink to the roof of the structure. This is thanks to the invention of the Studor vent. A Studor vent is designed to let air into a drain pipe while at the same time preventing water from leaking out in case of a backed-up or clogged drain.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PVC or hack saw
  • PVC cement
  • PVC pipe
  • PVC T-fitting
  • Studor vent
  1. Step 1

Cut the drain pipe close to where it enters the wall. Leave about an inch or so sticking out of the wall.

  2. Step 2

Remove the other end of the cut drain pipe from the drain trap.

  3. Step 3

Glue a T-fitting to the cut pipe extending from the wall. Make sure the "T" part of the fitting is facing straight up. Slide the fitting over the end of the pipe until the fitting stops sliding.

  4. Step 4

Glue a trap adapter in the other end of the T-fitting. This adapter fits inside the T-fitting. Slide it in until it won't move any more.

  5. Step 5

Connect the drain trap to the trap adapter by placing the end of the trap into the adapter. Tighten the screw ring on the adapter to fasten the two pieces together.

  6. Step 6

Glue a short piece of pipe into the "T" part of the fitting. Glue the Studor vent onto the piece of pipe by placing the vent on top of the pipe and pressing downward on the vent to seat it in place.
