How to Light a Rheem Gas Heater

Rheem has built a reputation of having some of the best gas water heaters that last a long time. They have built the heater to make sure that the flame isn't put out easily by allowing enough air filtration to provide less clogging from dirt and lint. The smallest tanks hold up to 40 gallons of water and are very easy to light. But with the gas heater you must be careful and smell for gas before lighting.

    Instructions

Look for the box located on the bottom front of the gas heater. It will have a knob on the front that will allow you to adjust the temperature (turn it to the lowest temperature) and several knobs around it. Find the cock knob, which is next to the red button sitting on top edge of the box. Turn the knob clockwise to the off position.

Open the outer door on the Rheem gas heater. You should see several cords and pipes. Look for the piezo ignitor striker. This will be on the right side of the gas control pipe and will have a valve you will press down in order to ignite the pilot for the gas heater.

Turn the gas cock knob counterclockwise. Place it in the pilot position. Press down on the red button and hold it down.

Light the gas heater. Press down on the ignitor like you are trying to light a cigarette lighter. It may take a few times before you see the pilot light is lit.

Continue to hold down the red button for a few minutes then let it go. The red button should pop back up. Close the outer door and turn the cock knob to the on position. Make sure to adjust the temperature knob in the front of the box to the temperature you will want the water.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you smell gas do not try to light the pilot. Avoid touching any electrical switches if you smell gas.
