How to Measure a Motorcycle Windshield

Motorcycle windshields are designed to block the wind from the driver to prevent fatigue during long trips on your vehicle. They also keep insects and bugs from hitting you while you travel. To purchase the right windshield for your motorcycle, you need to know the specifics of your motorcycle and how you want it designed. With the right measurements, you can find a windshield that will not only provide the most benefit to you, but also one that will greatly enhance the look of your motorcycle.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure across the diameter of the motorcycle headlight with a tape measure so you can use this measurement as a starting point in finding the right windshield. The motorcycle windshield needs to conform tightly to this diameter for the best advantage.

    • 2

Measure the vertical angle of the front motorcycle forks with a protractor or woodworker's angle to determine the degree of angle for the windshield. For aesthetics, as well as benefit to the rider, the windshield angle needs to match the angle of the front forks.

    • 3

Sit on the motorcycle in your normal riding position and have someone else measure from the point where the windshield attaches to the motorcycle, straight up to the point where it is even with the tip of your nose.

    • 4

Apply the angle that you measured from the front forks of your motorcycle to the height that you measured in Step 3, remembering to bring the height back to the height of the tip of your nose as you are applying the angle, and then read the measurement that you have. This will be the overall height of your windshield.

Tips & Warnings

  • Universal windshields are available if you just need a windshield quickly for your motorcycle.
