Step 1
Open the Internet browser. These include Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera. Double click on the address bar. This will highlight the current address. Press the "Del" key.

Enter "FTP://" into the address bar. Insert the FTP site after the backslash. For example, the address bar would read "FTP://1.1.1.1" or "FTP://ftp.abab.com/."

Insert any account name or password. If it is a restricted FTP website, a pop-up box will appear. If it is public, you can begin browsing the files straight away.

Download and then install the FTP client for use. These include but are not limited to Cute FTP Professional or SmartFTP Client. Each program costs less than $60.

Insert the FTP address. Cute FTP provides a "Connection Wizard." Type in the site in the "Host Address" box. Then click the "Next" button. With SmartFTP, click the "Address" box. Insert the FTP site.

Use a user name and password. In Cute FTP, type in the "User" and "Password" information. If it is a public site, click the "Anonymous" circle. Click the "Next" tab. With SmartFTP, insert the user information next to the address bar, "Login" and "Password." For a public site, select the "Anonymous" button. Click the arrow next to the "Address" bar to connect.

Step 4
Browse through the FTP files. In Cute FTP, the main window is the FTP site and to the left is your computer. With SmartFTP, locate the file you want to download and double click. Then the transfer will appear in the bottom box.
