How to Assemble a Coaxial Cable

How do you turn a length of cable into a usable coaxial cable? The cable itself is a configuration of wire and insulator that allows for transmission of electrical signals. By attaching two RF type F connectors, also known as SNS connectors, you can assemble the cable, which is usable for cable and satellite television and cable modems.

Things You'll Need

  • Cable
  • Two SNS connectors
  • Razor knife or wire cutters
  • Crimping tool

  1. How to Assemble a Coaxial Cable

    • 1

Measure the length of cable you need for your project. Do this by taking the cable off the spool and run it along the path you intend for the cable to follow. Extend the cable 4 to 5 inches and cut with a razor knife or wire cutter.

    • 2

Use a razor knife or wire cutter to cut away approximately 3/4 inch of the outer insulation. Just beneath the outer insulation is the braid; this looks like mesh. Do not cut into the braid.

    • 3

Slit the braid lengthwise. Using a razor knife, make a vertical slit in the braid. This will reveal a foil wrapped wire. Do not cut the wire. Pull the braid back so it overlaps the outer insulation.

    • 4

Use wire strippers to carefully remove 3/8 of an inch of the foil and the dielectric. The dielectric is white in color and is wrapped around the central copper wire.

    • 5

Position the SNS connector so the exposed end of the white colored dielectric is now flush with the metal flange inside the connector. The connector should now be in place on the prepared cable end.

    • 6

Secure the SNS connector to the cable using a crimp connector tool. Trim any braid that may still be exposed from below the connector.

    • 7

Repeat from step 2 to add the SNS connector to the other end of the cable. Test your assembled coaxial cable by plugging it in and turning on the electronic devices.
