How to Work a Submersible Sump Pump

A submersible pump works in pools, flooded basements and other places you may need to pump standing water out of an area. It is designed to be placed and used in water without the risk of electrical shock. The pump must be in good working order before you can use it in this capacity.

    Things You'll Need

    • Submersible Sump Pump With Hose
    • Extension Cord
      • 1

Inspect the power cord on the sump pump as well as the extension cord to make sure that it has no cuts in the plastic coating.

      • 2

Plug the extension cord into a grounded outlet.

      • 3

Attach the hose to the pump. The pump may have come with a hose, or you can use a garden hose.

      • 4

Connect the pump power cord to the extension cord.

      • 5

Place the pump into the standing water. If you're draining a pool or pool cover, drop it into the water only enough to submerge.

      • 6

Use something like a brick to hold the cord out of the water if you do not want to hold the cord yourself.

      • 7

Watch the pump and lower it into the water more as it sucks out the water.

    Tips & Warnings

    • When you are done with the submersible sump pump, allow it to dry thoroughly before putting it away.

    • Do not allow the pump cord to fall into the water where it meets the extension cord. Never allow the pump to continue running without a water source.
