Things You'll Need:
- Pea seeds
- Organic matter, such as manure or compost
- Sand
- Bamboo poles
- Hemp string
- Sharp knife

Step 1
Pick a portion of your garden to plant your peas. Peas don't mind being crowded, so even with a small space you can plant a good amount of seeds.

Work the organic matter into the soil in the area you have chosen. Peas prefer sandy, aerated soil, so you can also work in a small amount of sand if you wish.

Peas can tolerate cold temperatures fairly well, so you may plant as soon as the ground is workable. A light frost will not hurt them. Plant the seed about 1 inch deep, and about 2 inches apart. If you are planting in rows, the rows should be about 24 inches apart.

Peas are climbers, so you must provide them with a simple structure to climb on. At intervals along each row, drive a bamboo stake into the ground.

At the top of each stake, cut a notch with a sharp knife. Tie your hemp string between each stake, wrapping it around the notch to prevent it from sliding down the stake. Hemp string works best because it is tolerant of weather and pests and won't disintegrate.
