1
Remove any attachments, such as hoses, and use a broom handle or a skinny pole to push clogs and debris out of them. These can constrict the airflow and keep the vacuum from working right.
-
2
Unplug the vacuum, and for upright models, lay them down and remove the screws from the underside. Take off the underside cover so you can see the parts inside the vacuum.
-
-
3
Pull out the agitator brush--the part with bristles that spins around--to clean it. If the drive belt is wrapped around it, you'll need to slide the drive belt off. If the drive belt looks worn out or cracked, remove it from the vacuum.
-
4
Pull off any hair or debris that are caught or tangled in the agitator brush. If the brush is broken, buy a new one. Often simply removing debris will allow it to spin freely again.
-
5
Replace the agitator brush, if the drive belt was fine, and slip the drive belt back around it. If the drive belt was broken, buy a new one and replace it before reassembling the agitator brush.
-
6
For canister vacuums, lift off the cover of the vacuum. Empty or replace the filter in your vacuum and clean out any chunks of debris you find inside the vacuum.
-
7
Reassemble your vacuum and test it out. If it doesn't work, call a professional or contact the manufacturer about getting it fixed or receiving a replacement vacuum.

Tips & Warnings
Save your receipt and papers when you buy your vacuum. It will usually be under warranty for a certain amount of time, and if you have the papers, you can have it fixed for free if it breaks.
